How Your Body’s Detoxification System Works
Let’s take a look at how the body eliminates toxins. First of all, contrary to pubic belief, the liver is the primary organ of detoxification, not the intestines. Although important, the intestines, kidneys, lungs and skin are all secondary organs of elimination and detoxification. The liver has two important steps to remove toxins.
During Step 1 toxins are literally turned into free radicals (harmful molecules that trigger disease). However, when sufficient amounts of antioxidants and other vital nutrients are available the liver neutralizes the free radicals or converts them into less harmful substances. The best source of nutrients required for Step 1 are from foods like fruits, vegetables and especially superfoods. Antioxidants from green tea/white tea, milk thistle, acai berries, pomegranate , blueberries, vitamin E and B vitamins from wheat grass, barley grass, carotonoids from goji berries, bilberry, mangosteen all help provide the nutritional power to run the body’s detoxification system (See ZingGo! If any vitamins, minerals or antioxidants are missing during Step 1, and toxin exposure is too high, or an individual has a sluggish liver, a tired, toxic body riddled with illness or premature death can result.
In Step 2, the liver converts fat-soluble toxins into water soluble substances that can be passed out of the body through the bile and the urine. But the liver must release bile into the intestines, and if everything is working right the toxins are flushed out of the body. The most important nutrients required for Step 2 are sulphur containing amino acids found in beans, garlic and cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli sprouts.
If a sufficient amount of water soluble fiber (beans, flax seeds, etc) is available, the toxins, and the cholesterol in the bile, will hitch a ride on the fiber, eliminating these toxins in the feces. This is the normal function of our body’s detoxification system when everything is working right. However, if an individual is constipated or has a sluggish liver or intestine, the cholesterol and the toxins will be reabsorbed back into the blood. If this occurs the body will slowly accumulate poisons and cholesterol. Next, toxins get inside the cells, tissues, organs and glands and ultimately lower your energy and increase your risk for disease. But, a healthy lifestyle, a well-designed nutrition plan, with an internal cleansing program will keep your body in optimal health.
